Thank you for the recommendation of "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas." The movie, “Snowpiercer” (images from which still haunt me - it’s not my usual fare) has a similar child character. Although the movie was sold as a story about climate change, I viewed it as much more in the spirit of Ursula K. Le Guin’s parable - a broader question indeed.
